Grade A vs Grade B steel plate
Both are 235 MPa normal-strength hull structural grades with identical tensile range and elongation — the difference is impact testing: Grade A is not impact-tested at normal thickness, Grade B is tested at 0°C.

How to choose
Grade B is the mill's core stock item and the more heavily stocked of the two, held in thicknesses up to 22 mm against Grade A's 12 mm ceiling — for most general hull applications B is the default. Grade A remains the right choice where the structural drawing specifically does not require impact toughness and a thinner section is sufficient. Confirm which the drawing specifies before ordering, since the two are not interchangeable once a classification society has approved a design against one of them.
