Welding consumable certificate checker
Enter the results printed on an approval or test certificate for a welding consumable. The checker compares each one with the CCS Rules for its grade, shows which meet the table, which do not and which need your judgement, and names the clause behind every line.

What this checker covers
CCS Rules for Materials and Welding 2021, Part 3 Chapter 2: Table 2.2.2.3 for structural steel consumables of grades 1, 2, 3, 1Y, 2Y, 3Y, 4Y, 2Y40, 3Y40, 4Y40 and 5Y40, covering the deposited weld metal (yield, tensile, elongation, impact) and the butt weld joint (tensile, impact, bend), and Table 2.3.1.1 for the diffusible hydrogen grade of electrodes.
What it does not cover
Chemical composition, flux and wire combinations in detail, consumables of 3Y42 and above, nickel alloy and stainless steel consumables, and the annual checks and marking of approved consumables. It does not replace the approval of the consumable.
Questions about checking a consumable certificate
- Why can a lower impact energy sometimes pass?
- Notes 3 and 4 of Table 2.2.2.3 allow a lower average, 34 J, or 39 J for a yield strength of 400 N/mm² and over, for automatic welding of the weld metal test and for vertical and automatic butt welds. The note mark is printed only on the first two columns of the table, so for grades 2Y40 and above the checker shows a result below 47 J as needing your judgement.
- Why is diffusible hydrogen only checked for electrodes?
- Table 2.3.1.1 is in the section on arc electrodes. It asks for H15 on grades 4Y, 2Y40, 3Y40 and 4Y40, sets no requirement on the lower grades, and does not list 5Y40.
- What if the tensile strength is above the upper limit?
- Note 8 says CCS considers that case separately, so the checker marks it for your judgement and does not call it a failure.

Every cell of Table 2.2.2.3, its notes and Table 2.3.1.1 were read from the page images of the CCS Rules for Materials and Welding 2021. This is the CCS rule, not an IACS unified requirement: IACS UR W17 needs a free IACS login to download and was not checked. Your society's own rules govern.
This is a screening aid. It does not replace your classification society's approval of the consumable, and it does not make a certificate valid. For plate ready to ship, contact us. Request a quote
